A look back in time

A look back in time: 1940’s

The era of ‘Make Do and Mend’, the 1940’s was a time where the world was at war. Rationing was implemented on clothing in England from 1941 because many clothing factories were needed to create uniforms and parachutes for the war it eliminated the capability to produce intricate expensive clothing, making it the decade of utilitarian style. This is shown in the form of simple tea dresses much like the ones in The Edge of Love and The Notebook.

A look back in time

A look back in time: 1930’s

The 1930s started with heavy repercussions of The Great Depression which hit at the end of the 1920’s. The world was no longer in a state of prohibition, partying and glitzy flapper dresses, and women’s fashions shifted towards a conservative style. As a form as escapism from the great depression women turned to Hollywood, lapping up the glamorous style of their favourite Hollywood sirens such as Bette Davis, Willis Simpson and Marlene Deitrich. Here is a collation of that 1930’s style through film.
